The epidemic of homelessness in our community, coupled with limited emergency shelter space and a lack of affordable housing, leaves few options for survivors of domestic violence. Due to these factors, The West (prior to the expansion), could only accommodate 4% of those seeking safety. Women unable to stay at a shelter, fear that leaving an abusive relationship will lead to life on the street, where they and their families face an increased risk of sexual and physical abuse.
Our expansion will be the most significant increase to domestic violence emergency shelter beds in Portland since our system was created in the late 1970's. Upon completion, the West will have doubled the number of emergency shelter beds making it the largest domestic violence shelter in Oregon, with a capacity of 60 beds. Not only will survivors receive a shelter bed, they will also receive our extensive advocacy and services, meals, child care, clothing, a lifelong support system, and ultimately, "A Safe Place to Begin Again."
To be successful and sustainable, The West is looking for financial support to fulfill various expansion needs over the course of three years including:
